eBay listing images: size, requirements and what actually helps

eBay's rules are looser than Amazon's — which is exactly why listings there look so uneven, and why clean images stand out so hard.

The numbers
  • 500 px longest side — the hard minimum
  • 1600 px — the comfortable target for zoom
  • Up to 24 photo slots free on most categories
  • No borders, seller text or watermarks

The requirements, short

Size. At least 500 px on the longest side; 800–1600 px recommended, 1600+ keeps zoom sharp after compression.
Background. White or light neutral recommended; catalog-listed products in some categories require it. Clutter costs clicks everywhere.
No additions. Borders, promotional text, watermarks and pasted-on artwork are against policy — the photo shows the product, nothing else.
Used items. Must be photos of the actual item, defects included — stock or generated images cannot replace them.
First photo. Becomes the search thumbnail on a white card — compose it big, centred and legible at small size.
Formats. JPEG, PNG, and other common formats are accepted; JPEG is the safe default.

Standing out on a messy shelf

On eBay the competition is photographed on kitchen tables. A set with a clean hero, consistent detail shots and a scale frame reads as a professional seller — and that trust converts. Renolvo generates that set from one photo of a new product: hero on a clean background, details, scale, lifestyle — sized above the zoom threshold. One image from $0.54, 500 free tokens to start.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum image size on eBay?
500 px on the longest side is the hard minimum — listings will not go live below it. For zoom to work well, eBay recommends 800–1600 px; upload 1600+ and you cover everything.
How many photos does an eBay listing get?
Up to 24 photo slots are available free on most categories (12 on some). Nobody needs all of them — 8–12 well-chosen frames beat 24 random ones.
Does eBay require a white background?
White or light neutral backgrounds are recommended and required for some catalog-style categories, but eBay is not as strict as Amazon. Clean and uncluttered is the practical rule.
What is banned on eBay photos?
Borders, seller text and watermarks, and artwork added on top of the photo. Stock photos are not allowed for used items — the buyer must see the actual item.
Can AI-generated images be used on eBay?
For new items — yes, if they truthfully show the product you ship. For used items eBay requires photos of the actual item, so generated frames can only supplement, not replace them.
