Etsy listing photos: sizes, ratio and what to put in the ten slots

Etsy gives every listing ten photo slots and crops the first one into a 4:3 thumbnail. Here are the numbers that matter in 2026, and how to fill the slots so the listing sells.

A working plan for the ten slots

Etsy buyers shop with their eyes — reviews put photos above price. A slot plan that answers questions in order:

1. The hero, composed for 4:3. Product centred with margin — it must survive the thumbnail crop.
2–3. Detail close-ups. Texture, stitching, glaze, engraving — the things a hand would check in a shop.
4–5. Scale and context. Next to a familiar object, in the hand, on the shelf — Etsy buyers fear wrong sizes.
6–7. Lifestyle scene. The product in the life it is bought for: worn, hung, poured, gifted.
8. Variations. Colours and options in one frame, so buyers see the choice without scrolling the dropdown.
9–10. Packaging and size chart. Gift-readiness sells on Etsy; a size or dimensions chart kills the most common question.

What makes Etsy photos underperform

Uploads under 2000 px. Zoom goes soft and the listing reads as amateur next to sharp neighbours.
A first photo that dies in 4:3. Tall compositions lose the top and bottom exactly where the product is.
Three slots used out of ten. Fewer angles, fewer answers, fewer reasons to stay on the listing.
Inconsistent light across slots. Warm hero, cold details — reads as different products.

Renolvo builds the whole slot set from one photo — same light, same style, sized to survive the thumbnail. One finished image starts at $0.54.

Frequently asked questions

What image size does Etsy recommend?
2000 px on the shortest side — that keeps the zoom crisp. Smaller uploads work, but Etsy itself flags anything under 2000 px as likely to look blurry.
What ratio does the Etsy thumbnail use?
Search and shop grids crop the first photo to roughly 4:3 landscape. Compose the first image so the product survives that crop — centred, with margin above and below.
How many photos can an Etsy listing have?
Ten photo slots plus one video. Sellers who fill most of the slots give the algorithm and the buyer more to work with — use them.
Do Etsy photos allow text and props?
Yes — unlike Amazon's main image, Etsy has no white-background rule. Lifestyle scenes, size charts and text overlays are normal; the first photo just has to read clearly in the 4:3 thumbnail.
Can AI-generated photos be used on Etsy?
For product photography of a physical item you sell — yes, as long as the images truthfully show your product. Note that Etsy has separate policies about AI-generated artwork sold as the product itself.
